So the world is messed up. So we’re using up all the earth’s resources and polluting our planet so fast that our children are going to hate us. So what! I can’t save the world. I can’t even help my family. We just have to get on the best we can. We just have to do what the “man” wants and hope we get paid.
And for you optimists: science will save us. Christ will return and set everything straight. Humanity will mature and stop acting so stupid. Not buying it? Didn’t think so.
So what can we do? It’s hard not to be depressed when thinking about all this, right? Let’s cut to the bottom line, the bare-knuckle truth, the undeniable reality we are stuck with when we are quiet and alone. IT DOESN’T MATTER.
It doesn’t matter what anyone else does. It doesn’t matter if anyone does anything to stem the death and destruction caused by modern man.
The only thing that does matter is WHAT YOU DO!
The Golden Rule is universally acknowledged as the litmus test of moral and ethical behavior. Do unto others what you would have them do unto you. Do what’s right by others and they will do right by you. Of course there is a cost for doing what’s right. In a world where corruption is rife, individuals who buck the system are penalized. So what! How can you live with yourself unless you are willing to do what’s right, no matter the cost? The good news is that everyone knows what’s right and wrong. Most of humanity knows what is right and wrong. When enough of us do what’s right others will wake up and find the courage to follow your lead.
To wit, we have written this pledge for you to sign and a petition to our leaders, our political, economic, religious, scientific, and artistic leaders. Pledge yourself to do what’s right, not to your constituents, not to your customers, not to your bosses or benefactors. Do what’s right for humanity!
We ask the rich and powerful to do right by us and we, in turn, will do right by you. Take care of us and we will take care of you. Continue on your current course and nothing will be able to save you. History speaks louder than words, but action speaks loudest of all. We are all one, citizens of a tiny planet in a far off corner of a very ordinary galaxy.
We will all make it, or none of us will make it. Your power and wealth cannot save you. In fact, your wealth is a lodestone of unbearable weight, a responsibility you cannot shoulder. Your influence is as ephemeral as the morning mist. Now you live in unimagined luxury and wield power like Thor’s hammer, but in the long run you will wither and die like the rest of us. The only difference is we will die martyrs to a Cause and you will die, blind, deaf, dump, and alone in the dark.
We ask you to sign this pledge here and now and at some point we will ask our leaders to sign it. We want to hold people to account for their deeds. People in power, means, and influence do not live in a vacuum. The poor surround you. Those you persecute wait, increasingly impatient and desperate. You will be held to account in this world and in the next! We want everyone to start doing what’s right for all of us, not just our narrow self-interest.
Doing what’s right is a habit, like any other. Sometimes, it is not clear what is right. Don’t confuse what’s right with what’s best. Keep it simple and keep trying. We’re all bound to slip, but practice makes perfect.
Putting the Golden Rule into action is the next step in the spiritualization of the planet and the salvation of humanity, but it’s up to you. It’s up to each and every one of you. Sign the pledge. Tell others. Help them to wake up. It’s not too late!
You may be willing to die or kill for your causes and your beliefs, but are you willing to live to the highest in all of us? The Golden Rule, rocks. Sing its tune. Dance to its rhythm. Let it ring out around the world and touch every heart and mind. Hearts and minds are not black and white, rich or power, right or wrong. Hearts and minds are filled or empty, filled with good or evil, refined and true or corrupt and false.
Time will tell, but some of us have little, and others have none. Judge fairly!
Let bright eyes, a smile, and a heart full of love speak for your truth, and let hands held up head high be the symbol of universal fellowship, the dawning of the Golden Age, and the sign that all lives matter. We are the fingers of one hand. Let it be open in peace and welcome.
Read the virtues pledge and then SIGN. Next, tell others: family, friends ... everyone! Be polite and show your sincerity through your actions. Sooner or later we will fail to live up to our pledge but let that reinvigorate your desire to do better and help others.
